A Tamil Brahmin wedding ceremony also known as “Kalyanam” is a beautiful blend of rituals and traditions that mark the sanctity of marriage. From “Nakshatra matching” to “Pandakal” where the groom’s family presents gifts to the bride’s family, to “Nichadartha” (engagement) where the formal engagement takes place, every ritual has deep cultural significance.
The wedding day began with the “Muhurtam”, the auspicious time chosen for the wedding ceremony, followed by the “Kashi Yatrai”, where Bharata pretended to set off on Kashi (pilgrimage) with his grooms, only to be stopped by Janaki. The father symbolizes Bharat’s acceptance into the family. The ceremony continued with the “Swing” blessed by the elders of Janaki and Bharat sitting on the swing and the “Kanyadanam” where Janaki’s father gave her to Bharat.
Amid Vedic hymns and garlands and exchanges of vows, Janaki and Bharata, surrounded by their loved ones, took seven symbolic steps called “sabtapati” around the sacred fire, each step symbolizing their pledge to each other. With the performance “Mangalsutra Dharanam”, Bharat tied a “Mangalyam” around Janaki’s neck, signifying their union as husband and wife.
By Jaihind Photography, Janaki and Bharat’s Tamil Brahmin wedding ceremony was captured with utmost reverence and respect for tradition. Each photo captured the beauty and grace of their union, preserving their precious memories for generations to come.
